aNSWER THE call to serve
Volunteer Firefighters are essential, particularly in rural and small-town communities where they often serve as the primary responders to emergencies. While Volunteer Firefighters are needed throughout the United States, their presence is particularly crucial in rural and underserved areas where they form the backbone of emergency response services.
rural areas
In states with vast rural areas, such as Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Minnesota, Volunteer Firefighters are indispensable. For instance, in Kansas, volunteers protect about 85% of the state, while in Minnesota, they comprise 97.5% of the firefighting force (CTIF). Other states heavily recruiting volunteers are: California, Texas, Colorado, Illinois, and Rhode Island.

NATIONWIDE
Communities nationwide, especially those with limited resources, rely heavily on volunteers to respond to fires, medical emergencies, and natural disasters. The decline in volunteer numbers has been significant; in Pennsylvania, the number of Volunteer Firefighters has shrunk from 300,000 in the 1970s to 38,000 in 2018. (NewsNation).
